After all that's gone on the UK this week, it's nice to be able to say we WON'T be talking about politics in this episode - well not for long, anyway. We WILL however be talking about an 80's property that's getting a bit of a makeover this year! In an age of GI Joes and Transformers, Kenner decided in 1985 that they would basically combine the two and make a superconcept - that concept became the mighty M-m-m-MASK! They're the mighty power who will save the day, and Glenn, Paula, Sam and Becca are going to spotlight them! Hopefully they won't be working overtime, though. Overtime sucks. Top 5 MASK vehicles? I'll go with those I have direct, substantial experience with -- I was a fan as a kid, though it was never my "main fandom." One of my friends and I used to pool our resources and play with the toys, and while we had a lot of the figures a good amount of those came from the 2-packs so vehicles were a bit lacking.
1) Switchblade - The best MASK toy I owned, it looked great in both forms and the auto-converting element was cool. Plus you got the main bad guy character. 2) Thunderhawk - Iconic, with the other main character. The car mode looked awesome and the flying car was goofy as hell, but conformed to kid-logic -- if the doors flip up like wings, of COURSE it could fly! Also, for a toy in that scale it was a nice touch to add functional seatbelts. Makes sense though; Id want some kind of restraints if there were a risk of plummeting to my doom every time I banked! 3) Slingshot - My friend had this but I was very covetous. Such a cop-out conversion -- a camper-van just flipping open down its length -- but having a cool rocket-jet launch out made for such a change in function and exemplified the whole illusion and surprise aspects of the franchise. 4) Vampire - I had this one; it was the only other vehicle I actually owned and I bought it after I'd sold all my other MASK stuff. The character of Floyd Malloy was part of the appeal but I also just liked the overall look of both vehicle modes. I'd not seen a touring cycle in real life until after I was already familiar with Vampire, so it meant that when I DID see one I got a little bit of a thrill to think that all the bulky stuff on the back might actually be concealing rocket boosters... 5) Jackhammer - Another that I didn't own but got to play with (although I did have the Cliff Dagger/Sly Rax figure pack). As with Switchblade, I thought the auto-conversion elements worked well -- it's always fun when you can transform a toy almost as quickly as it changes in the show. I liked that what was already a pretty imposing-looking vehicle became even MORE imposing with the additional militarised elements. We got close to a remake of this (minus the turret) with the Steel Crusher from the GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra line (the Cobra SUV from the movie's Paris street-chase) which just helps to prove the viability of the concept at least in terms of fun toys.
